4TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FOR UGANDA PRISONS SACCO

Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) SACCO is a society formed by the staff to mobilize their savings and to loan each other at affordable interest rate. The society held her 4th AGM on Friday 14th January, 2011 at Prisons Training School & Staff College, Luzira.

The Chief Guest was Dr. Specioza Naigaga Wandira, the former Vice President of the Republic of Uganda and current Board Chairperson for the Microfinance Support Centre Ltd.

In his speech the Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr. J.O.R Byabashaija, who is also the Patron for the Prisons SACCO informed the AGM that the SACCO has evolved in the last four years to become a model SACCO, in terms of its management and service delivery to its members, in the Country band the region.

He said that as a result of this experience, the UPS had successfully established the staff Duty Free Shop which is being handled through the Prisons SACCO. He encouraged all the UPS staff to use this opportunity and plan for better shelter for their families.

Highlights of the overall performance
  • Total savings of members grew from 750,343,496/= (FY 2008/2009) to 1,109,258,004/=(FY2009/2010) representing 47.8% growth.
  • Outstanding loan principle balance rose from 706,410,631/= (FY2008/2009) to 1,185,370,380/= (FY 2009/2010) representing 67% growth.
  • Total assets value grew from 934,504,973/= (FY 2008/2009) to 1,438,664,988/= (FY2009/2010) representing 54% increase.
  • Growth in membership was realized from 3,120 for FY 2009/10 to the current 5,070 members.
The society has got five junior officers fully deployed to manage its daily operations. The Manager being Alex Kennedy Opiny (P.O II).

The former board under the leadership of Mr. Omita Robert Okoth (Assistant Commissioner in charge Welfare and Rehabilitation), was re-elected to serve yet another term. The names of the board members are shown below:
